About the event
Join Artsjunktion at C2 Centre for Craft on Tuesday, September 17th from 1pm to 4pm, with mixed-media artist Bernard Ferguson, for a special workshop Upcycled - A Transformation.
Vintage materials are time capsules embedded with their own history and stories that often lure and evoke us into a dialogue to translate and express. The fragments of text and imagery from another era mingles with our consciousness and arrives on the surface in a hybrid abstract poetic form. The workshop will be directed at creating and transforming upcycled mixed media materials into a reclaimed abstract art piece in a frame. After laying down a backdrop of collaged paper and paint, the process will delve into a raw automatic and intuitive approach to capture an authentic expression through tearing, meditative scribbling, and mark making with different mediums to express something innate or in the moment. People are encouraged to work on multiple pieces at the same time while one is in process or drying, frames can be painted/collaged after to go with the work.
Bernard Ferguson is a Winnipeg based multi disciplined artist with a BFA from UM. Bernard has exhibited his work in local galleries, teaches ceramic/art classes and works in a library maker space when not producing art at his west end or home studio. Bernard’s art practice has been an accumulative fluid dialogue in the making. Whether its clay or upcycled collage materials, these mediums are an inception towards a dialogue in the art making process. Bernard produces abstract mixed media art on various materials including reclaimed wood panels, or paper board often found at Arts Junction. The harder surfaces are more receptive to endure and accommodate a more vigorous, intuitive and energetic release through his mixed media mark making approach. His collage materials are often a random assortment of vintage books/magazines, song books, paper scraps, wallpaper, maps and intuition.
Tickets for this workshop are $20, but we offer sliding scale prices to anyone for whom price is a barrier (if this is you, send us an email at workshops@artsjunktion.mb.ca or dm!)
